Virus Scanners

Viruses, or malware, are computer programs that spread from computer to computer sort of like the cold virus spreads from person to person. There are lots of different viruses that do all kinds of different things. There are viruses that purposely ruin your computer or make it run really slow, others that will spy on your computer activity and some just copy themselves for the sake of spreading to as many computers as possible.

Virus scanners scan your hard drive for known viruses. Because new viruses are constantly created virus scanners most be frequently updated. It is also suggested that you run several different virus scanner programs because some scanners pick up viruses that other scanners do not.

After a computer is scanned for viruses you will be shown a list of found viruses (if any). If there are viruses found you will be given the option to delete them or not. Some viruses are hard to delete, or sometimes you might be unsure if a file is really a virus or not, in cases like these most virus scanners gives you a quarantine option. Quarantining a virus will not delete it but keep it separated from the rest of your computer operations. You can usually delete the files in the quarantine folder after you determine that they are not files that you need for your computer.
